"The War Party, part 15:
Ralphie Knows Best."
Like a Slow Burn
Leading us on and on and on
Like a Slow Burn
Twirling us round and round and upside down
-- David Bowie, "Slow Burn."
BOB: So, what you're saying is that, really, even though this is
the year 2002, it's still really the 1980s.
BRIAN: Mid '80s. Sure.
BOB: How about late '80s?
BRIAN: What d'you mean?
BOB: Late '80s makes more sense.
BRIAN: So, what you're saying is that it's not 1985?
BOB: I'm guessing it's more like the end of the '80s. Maybe
'89.
BRIAN: '89?
BOB: Yeah. End of the 80s, beginning of the '90s.
BRIAN: How d'you figure?
BOB: Well, Grunge is coming back. There's a George Bush
in the White House. And he's destroying the environment and running
roughshod over international law. And there's even a pointless war
in Iraq. Pretty much seems like the late 80s to me. Or maybe even
1990.
BRIAN: Makes sense to me.
BOB: And everything is still postmodern and ironic, too.
On top of it all.
BRIAN: Yeah. And I'm still lonely and desperate.
BOB: With delusions of grandeur.
BRIAN: Oh yeah. Can't forget the delusions of grandeur.
BOB: And, if this is still the '80s, and there's a Bush in the
White House, maybe next term there'll be a Clinton.
BRIAN: Sure. Maybe Hillary can run.
BOB: Or Bill. I mean, hell, he's not doing anything important
now, after all no one's giving him a talk show, and besides, doesn't the
rule only prevent two consecutive terms. There's nothing about taking
a break for a few years and then starting over again.
BRIAN: I think I'll have to look that one up.
BOB: Even if I'm wrong, screw it. They can make an exception
this time. I mean, it's not like there's anything else worthwhile
coming up on the horizon....
